tutor.

I offer photography groups, courses, extension classes and evening classes for every age group and can design a program to your requirements and students' need and interest. I have a degree in teaching and I am currently registered with the New Zealand Teachers Council.

:: for community education | evening classes

From 2009 - 2011 I worked together with Hamilton's Boy's High School Community Education. I offered night classes and one day workshops teaching digital photography in a basic and more advanced level for adults. Unfortunately HBH community education is discontinued. But if you would like to do a class in your group or club please get in touch with me and I can talk to you about the details.

:: for private lessons

I am available for private bookings for a more in depth learning. This gives you the chance to gain as much as possible from my experience and teaching methods. This private tutoring makes it possible to meet very flexible anywhere you want, focusing on what you would like to learn.This can be the very basics in digital photography or more advanced photography themes or going on a guided field trip.

I personally use canon. Naturally, I am not an expert in all camera models that are out there but if you bring your manual along I can help you learn more about your specific camera model. For example, we can find out what buttons mean and how to change camera settings. If you like, we can meet for the first lesson and have a chat about the things you can do and what you would like to do and then go from there.

For more information or bookings please contact me.

Note: No travel costs within Hamilton. I will quote for travel costs to locations outside of the Hamilton area.

:: finding the right gear

In the past I received many emails asking for help with finding the right camera and thought why not posting it here. Why don't you try answer the following questions, which will help you to narrow it down, and then go with your answers to a camera dealer and let them do the work to show you all the models that are out there? Spend a day and get all the info together so you are happy with what you bought for many years! Use internet, forums, stores and friends in your area to find out more.

  • First, what do you want to spend on a camera? $500 or $5000?
  • What would you like to photograph? Where are your interests?
  • How serious are you about this hobby? Just starting or needing the next step in gear?
  • Is it more important for you to have exchangeable lenses suited for the images you want to take (SLR camera) OR having a small lightweight compact camera?
  • Think also about an extra or 2 or 3 memory cards somewhere between 2 and 4 GB. They can get lost, corrupt, and FULL :o)
  • Same is true for another camera battery. they get empty though ;o)
  • Protective quality filter so your lens doesn't get scratches (might not be possible for all camera models).
  • AND don't forget in your budget: a protective bag for your expensive gear! It needs to be suitable for what you want to use your camera for: hiking, city sightseeing, travelling the world, shooting a wedding?
add ons that you can get later might be:
  • some software for your computer (canon gives you some basic software with its SLRs - a good starting point, free is Picasa from google),
  • tripod,
  • more fancy filters for your lenses,
  • cleaning equipment for camera,
  • more lenses (if SLR camera),
  • external shutter release, ...

this list could go on for days :o)

I hope this is helpful. Have fun looking and choosing - I always do!
