:: hmmmm german bakery ::
Friday, 21 October 2011 00:00

one of the things I truly miss are german bakery products. I do have quite a special relationship to this trade as my granddad was a master baker with 40 years of experience - and I used to spend my school holidays his bakery. can you imagine as a 7 year old walking into a bakery (back end I am talking!) all the smells+tastes and noise and routines! ohhh what a great memory. I wish I could go back in time with my camera and show you what I remember. I went back to this special childhood place this year and recorded what is left. I plan do to a photoStory about it so watch this space. :o) in the meantime: here are some photographs to get your mouth all watery. And yes they all taste delicious!

:: how germans do asparagus ::
Monday, 26 September 2011 00:00

I found that Germans seem to do asparagus - or how we call it "Spargel" - a wee bit different to other places so I thought there is a reason for me travelling the most famous asparagus region right when they are in season :o)

we used to live 'right next door' to Schwetzingen where the asparagus is sold at these stands with a historic castle and park as backdrop. can't get it more Europe than that!

this is considered top of the line sold at €8,50 per kg. notice the asparagus is WHITE? jep, that's how we love it and eat it and green is not on!

and this is second grade....

you can find these sandy fields everywhere in the area. they are worked in very early hours so the sun doesn't turn the asparagus into green. workers are mainly season workers from Poland who cut the asparagus in the ground before it comes out. so these ones are actually not harvested any more.

seeing these photographs brings back the summer heat, the soft texture of the asparagus, the buttery creamy sauce hollandaise with the smell of fresh backed potatoes, bacon, and "Flammkuchen". ohhh this is mouth watering.
